"These two landscapes were conceived
and worked as a complementary pair. The idea was to represent
two completely different types of atmosphere: a lush English countryside,
and the rich, sun-drenched tones of autumnal Tuscany. My own mind's
eye view of England is pastoral and sees a stream flowing through
a meadow against a background of trees and rolling hills. It stems
from memories of childhood and long hot summer days in Somerset
when, in my mind at least, the sun always seemed to be shining
and the sky was incredibly blue. By contrast with the greenness
of rural England I wanted the Tuscan landscape to have more vibrant
golds and earth tones, with cypress trees, fields of sunflowers
and rows of vines."
