This design is based on a detail from the bas-reliefs of angels
that decorate the interior of the magnificent Watts Chapel, Compton,
Surrey. The background is derived from the sinuous tendrils of vines
that are woven intricately throughout the entire interior. It is
a fabulous building, which is filled with Victorian symbolism. Mary
Seton Watts, a great believer in socialist ideals, used the Chapel
as a training vehicle for the Compton Villagers, eventually establishing
the Compton Potters' Art Guild.
The design is worked on 12hpi Zweigart interlock canvas and
measures 13½ x 13½ in (34 x 34 cm).
