This design in based on thecoat of arms of the
Crichton-Stuart family who were the builders of the
original 13th century Castell Coch
(Red Castle) near Cardiff, Wales. It appears in the
banqueting hall of the wonderful 19th century rebuild,
which is the most fabulous Victorian gothic fantasy of how
they believed a medieval castle would look. The later
version was built by William Burges for Lord Bute. It is
absolutely stunning, with hardly any surface left
unpainted, including many original pieces of furniture.
Well worth a visit!
The motto reads 'Carpe Diem' - 'Seize the Day'.
The tapestry is worked on 12hpi
canvas and measures 21in x 18 in (47cm x 46cm)
suitable for a wall hanging or large pillow.
