In Celtic mythology, Aiofe (pronounced eefa) was
the second wife of the Danaan god Lir. Lir had previously
fathered four children by Aiofe's sister, but Aiofe
herself was unable to conceive. She grew increasingly
jealous of her husbands devotion and love for his children
and resolved to destroy them. Ultimately, she could not
kill them, and instead transformed them by magic into four
swans.
When Lir discovered what Aiofe had done, he cast a spell
on her and turned her into a demon of the air, whereupon
she was never heard from again.
